Newborn & Baby (0 - 18 months)

How to help your newborn sleep better

For months your baby was surrounded by warmth, darkness and constant movement. Recreating some of those familiar sensations can help them feel safe, calm and ready to sleep.

Think of it as helping them transition from their cosy womb suite to the outside world.

1. Mimic the womb for sleep

Newborns benefit from a peaceful environment that encourages sleep. Creating a calm, dim sleep environment can make a big difference. Darkness helps protect sleep and signals to your baby that it’s time to rest.

2. Use soothing sleep noise

A gentle, constant sound can help babies sleep better by masking sudden noises around the house (like the dog barking, the doorbell ringing or someone accidentally dropping a saucepan). Babies settle quickly with white noise after birth. It reminds them of the constant whooshing sound they heard for months in utero, which can feel familiar and calming. This is why tech can aid baby sleep through white noise and motion.

Aim for around 50–60 decibels similar to the sound of a running shower.

My personal recommendation is the BETTER SLEEP app, using the sounds “River” and “Eternity” mixed together with KIPP smart bassinet to help sooth the baby at its early stages. It creates a beautiful, calming background sound that many babies (and adults) settle to very well.

3. Gentle motion

During pregnancy your baby was constantly soothed by your movements. Every step you took gently rocked them towards sleep. Because of this, many newborns still find gentle motion incredibly calming after birth.

As a sleep consultant with more than 25 years of experience, I’m often asked whether I recommend rocking bassinets or settling devices for newborns.

My answer is always the same: in the early months, anything that safely helps babies settle and helps parents get a little more rest is worth considering.

Those first few months are all about supporting your baby’s transition into the world while preserving parental sanity. This is where the KIPP smart bassinet can be incredibly helpful to support the family's wellbeing in the fourth trimester.

The KIPP smart bassinet is designed to gently guide babies into sleep with a smooth head-to-toe gliding motion that mimics the natural rocking babies experienced in the womb. In other words, it does some of the soothing work for you, which can be very welcome at 2:17am when your arms are already tired from bouncing.

The KIPP smart bassinet includes a number of features designed to support settling and sleep:

• Head-to-toe gliding motion that gently calms babies
• Three motion speed settings to suit your baby’s mood
• Built-in vibration with three soothing levels
• Cry detection technology that automatically responds to your baby’s cries
• 12 built-in white noise and music tracks designed to support sleep
• Timer settings for guided settling
• Remote control adjustments so you don’t have to disturb your baby
• Built to new safety standards with a firm, flat mattress and breathable sides

For many parents, having a bassinet that can assist with settling means less pacing the hallway and more chances to actually sit down.

And in the early months of parenthood, that’s a very welcome bonus.
