Everything you need to know about pram seats

When choosing the right pram for your family, along with key considerations like fold and features, you will also need to consider the types of seat that will be best suited to your needs. This guide will help you to make an informed choice about which type of seats are best for your family, when considering single to double prams.

Double prams: Rumble seat versus full size seat

When it comes to double prams, parents need to choose between a pram with one full-size seat and one rumble seat, like the JIVE⁵ or a pram with two full-size seats, like the NUVO. You'll be surprised about all the reasons why you’ll want a pram with two full-sized seats when purchasing a double. And additionally, two full-sized seats that are interchangeable, and can be used in the upper or lower positions.

A full-size seat and a rumble seat configuration can be lighter weight due to fewer materials being used, and will also be a more compact option, however, this setup has some key limitations that can limit the pram's usability and reduce the overall value of your investment.

In contrast, a double pram with two full-size seats ensures that both children can use the pram comfortably for an extended period.

Rumble seat versus full size seat

Key considerations include:

Maximum period of use

Prams without two full-sized seats have a smaller second seat (even though the second seat is used for the older child). These second seats can only be used in the lower position and cannot be used in the upper position. However, your older child may outgrow the smaller second seat before they are ready to stop using the pram. You won't have the option to use the larger seat in the lower position for your older child with the smaller seat in the upper position. With two full sized seats you have complete flexibility for where your children are, no matter whether they are the older or younger child.

Functionality

Most second seats have limited functionality for example: smaller canopies, a fixed footrest, basic harness etc. With the Redsbaby NUVO, both seats have the same considered features including: Extension canopy with optional mesh panels, mesh panels in the seat back, contoured harness padding, adjustable footrest and premium comfort fabric. All these features provide complete comfort for both children.

Comfort

Both children are equally comfortable throughout their use of the pram in double mode. This would also reduce situations where your child is uncomfortable and wants to get out of the pram, and then you are trying to lug a toddler whilst pushing a pram with an empty seat.

Convenience

Interchangeable seats which can be used in either the upper or lower positions and when in single or double mode provide more convenience. When setting up your pram in double mode, you don't need to worry about which seat goes in which position (a life-saver when you're in a hurry or have someone that is unfamiliar with the pram caring for your children). Switching between single and double mode is also a breeze as you can use either seat in single or double mode.

Shared accessories

You can use the same rain cover, sunshade and other accessories on both seats, making it much easier when navigating with two children. You're not going to put the incorrect rain cover on each seat due to their designs being different which makes for reduced set-up time.

Aesthetics

Double prams with two equally sized seats are more harmonious and balanced in their design.
